As soon as I finished, I was due to go over to the Stitch and Bitch group at the nearby Swan Hotel, and the first thing I did was re-enact the scene with Butty Bach (just a half, though, not 11 pints!)Eigonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30743480.post-41654070926650796752010-05-12T18:18:08.035+01:002010-05-12T18:18:08.035+01:00Good article and it is good to see that many see t...Good article and it is good to see that many see the merits of occasion of a glacial glass of lager.

Kingsley Amis enjoyed a mix of Carlsberg Special Brew and regular Carlsberg lager. He blended them in a tankard, half and half, and advised to ice the beers as much as possible. He wrote eloquently of the "goodwill" which such a mixture could create, which I could well understand. Amis appreciated the merits of cask-conditioned beer - his writing on drink is clear on that - but I think he viewed his cold lager mix as a different (not competitive) thing, evidently for certain moments.

His three books on drinks and drinking were republished not long ago in one volume, and there is much wisdom in those pages. I wish he had devoted more space to beer. He does write rather more about pubs, trenchantly and with relevance still today.

GaryGary Gillmannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30743480.post-67089329761973792132010-05-11T17:34:33.242+01:002010-05-11T17:34:33.242+01:00@MicMac: while I'll plead guilty to mantling o...@MicMac: while I'll plead guilty to mantling on the beer foam, your post wasn't up when I commented about John Mills having drunk 11 glasses of Carlsberg to get the shot, so there was nothing at that point to keep up with.Martyn Cornellhttp://zythophile.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30743480.post-21840091146892348412010-05-11T10:24:29.433+01:002010-05-11T10:24:29.433+01:00I am a Ale drinker through and through but reading...I am a Ale drinker through and through but reading that does make me fancy an ice cold lager. Contains one of my all-time top favourite movie lines, as they're trying to winch the ambulance backwards up a huge sand dune by using the starter handle, from the great Harry Andrews: "It's a long shot - but it might just work!"

Interesting that in the movie you're left in doubt for much longer than in the book on whether or not the Anthony Quayle character is a Nazi spy.

The use in the book of Rheingold as the beer that was "Ice Cold in Alex" was presumably authentic, unlike the Carlsberg used in the film, when Denmark had been occupied by Germany for around a year, and would hardly be exporting to the Med. Egypt, of course, had its own lager, Stella (no relation …).

I assume we all knowm the story of John Mills and the 'money shot" - they couldn't get anything but real beer to look authentic, and it took Mills 11 shots to drain the beer in one, as he was required to do by the script, to the director's satisfaction - by which time, of course, he was rat-arsed …

And Sylvia Sims - what a babe indeed, though my earliest crush, by coincidence, was on John Mills's daughter Hayley.Martyn Cornellhttp://zythophile.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30743480.post-30908591097613170272010-05-09T20:46:41.513+01:002010-05-09T20:46:41.513+01:00Re continuity, etc, I heard John Mills recount the...Re continuity, etc, I heard John Mills recount the tale that the film-makers struggled to find anything else that would look the part being poured & in the glass, so they had to use beer.

For various technical reasons, the scene took numerous takes (hence the continuity disparity?) & Mills said he was totally pisht by the end of it.

Nice piece Pete.MicMachttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08464263001561643944noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30743480.post-45880451850498149022010-05-09T14:13:36.860+01:002010-05-09T14:13:36.860+01:00I believe that is Cooking Lager's grandfather ...I believe that is Cooking Lager's grandfather on the third stool.
